The Scarlet Letter

My last living grandparent, my grandma, voted in her 18th presidential election. I may be writing this as my last newsletter, as she will likely kill me for revealing her age via this story.
Growing up, we shared many political discussions over the dinner table and a lack of passion was not in our nature. My grandma won the prize for doing the most refreshing thing of all. She was taught that it was uncouth to tell people who you voted for or planned to vote for. Which letter are you - D or R? She said it was her "American right" to not answer when asked and certainly would never be forthcoming with the information. It wasn't until I was in high school that I could probably ascertain her proclivities.
I worry in this environment that even this story will be seen as a political message, but I am rather hoping it is just remembrance of simpler times and a celebration that we are able to vote and be loud or silent about it...
